My Rating System

Book reviews are very subjective. It is the readers opinion. You might agree with me or not. That is okay. I use a 5 star rating system.

5 Stars – This book is amazing! I couldn’t get enough of it, and it’s gonna stay in my head for quite some time. The characters were likable, and the story was one-of-a-kind. You have to read it!

4 Stars – This book is really good. It might have a couple of things that prevent me from calling it amazing, but they don’t really affect the overall story. I’d totally recommend it!

3 Stars – I liked it. However, it’s one of those books that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, didn’t quite resonate with me, or had some element I didn’t connect with.

2 Stars – I liked it enough to see it through, but I wouldn’t suggest it to others.

1 Star – I finished it because I had to to form an opinion. I do not recommend it.

DNF – Did not finish. I give a chance up to 100 pages. If the book did not grab my attention I will not finish it. No time to waste!

I hope this clarify my madness.

  1. I love it, will translate to Afrikaans and repost on my blog. I agree with it, 3’s and 2’s feel sometimes if I did not like the book. I kind of did, but swear words for example bothered me, especially if I listen to the book.

  2. As somebody who worked in the book business all his life, I don’t agree that reviews are mostly subjective. Maybe reviews on social media are, but professional reviews have an objective side. Style, originality, rhythm and metaphors, etc. There is a subjective side to it, but it shouldn’t be dominant.

    1. Hi Klausbernd, thank you so much for your comment.

I 100% agree that it is not entirely subjective. This is more for social media and I have found that what one person like another person does not.

I wish I could dicect a book like most people do but I am reading purely for the enjoyment and my reviews are mostly based on how I felt, if the book kept my attention, did I learn or take anything way from it. So in my case subjective to how I felt 🙂

      I appreacite your input.
